The husbandry library

Husbandry, done properly.

The keeping guides we wish we had found when we started. Reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates: the real parameters, where the animal comes from, and the mistakes that cost animals. Every sheet says where its figures came from, and whether the page it cites states them.

The animals

Photographed by people who were there.

Every image here is a photograph under an open licence, attached to that exact species by the naturalists of iNaturalist or the editors of Wikimedia Commons, and credited to whoever took it. We did not take them and we have not re-identified them: the photographer, the licence and the source are on each one so you can check. Where no photograph is licensed to us, the card stays a gradient rather than an invented animal.

How we check

There are ten thousand husbandry pages. Most were copied from each other.

What separates a guide you can act on from one you cannot is whether it tells you where its numbers came from, and what it does not know. So that is what we publish.

66

Sheets whose figures we could trace

We opened the page each sheet cites on 3 Aug 2026 and looked for the figures it shows. 66 of 382 hold up. The 313 that do not now say so on the page itself, above their own numbers.

394

Guides citing their sources

Named and linked, grouped by how much weight they carry. You can go and disagree with us.

0

Numbers we invented

When a sheet gives one ambient range and no warm side, the page shows one band and says the rest is not stated. A half empty guide is honest.

Veterinary advice

Husbandry is keeper preference. Anything health shaped routes to a qualified exotic vet, never to a diagnosis from us.

Inside

678 guides across 26 groups, in Thai, English and French.

Each one carries the enclosure, the temperatures, humidity, UVB, diet, behaviour, reproduction, the health signs that matter, and when to stop guessing and call a vet. 96 more species are on our list with guides in progress.

The journal

The questions worth asking before you buy, not after.

The guides answer how to keep an animal. The journal answers which one suits you, what a morph really costs you later, and what to ask a shop.
